53 Grade: 19 Job Summary: The purpose of this position is to perform a variety of highly skilled technical work in survey, inspection of highway construction projects, field testing quality control tests on materials, verifying quantities, documentation of daily construction activities, contracts, employee interviews, and construction checklist.
Complete administrative documentation and complex engineering reports.
train other ADOT personnel consultants on assigned construction project.
No designated area of assignment, position can be subject to irregular work hours.
Overtime may be required including working nights, weekends and holidays.
Occasional overnight travel may be necessary.
Required to drive a state vehicle on a daily basis.
Job Duties: Essential Duties and Responsibilities include but are not limited to: • Inspects highway construction work on an ongoing basis to assure compliance with contract and with State and Federal standards.
Inspections and examinations are made of materials, surface conditions, proper tracking, structural features, and other relevant factors • Inspects and examines engineering project records, field notes, computations, extra work orders, and other documentation to assure that methods of measurement and bases for payment are in accordance with projected trends, specifications, special provisions • Confers with construction engineers and contractors regarding construction in progress and its conformance to specifications and construction plans, answers questions, and resolves problems.
Attends partnering meetings for construction projects • Performs field materials tests on soils, aggregate bases, asphalts, and concretes for quality assurance • Consults manual, rulebook codes, or regulations in order to find exact required course of action, determination or authorization • Inspects sites on proposed highway facilities in order to review all factors relating to proposals and to confirm or verify data as presented • Logs or records all work, in order to have accurate history of work or work performed • Attends training, safety meetings and performs other duties as required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs): Knowledge in: • Principles and practices of civil engineering related to the construction of highway road systems • Construction inspection methods, procedures, and techniques • Construction materials testing procedures • Standards, policies, and procedures applicable to the area of assignment • Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) traffic control for work zones • Computer programs applicable to the functional work unit Skills in: • Work scheduling and management.
• Analysis and preparation of materials field testing data.
• Written and verbal communication.
• Operation of equipment for completion of assigned duties.
• Effective verbal and written communication.
Ability to: • Operate and maintain a variety of construction quality control equipment • Read and interpret a variety of construction documents, including highway maps and plans • Plan, coordinate, analyze, and perform multiple tasks and inspections • Establish and maintain work relationships Selective Preference(s): The ideal candidate for this position will have: High School diploma or GED.
- Four years’ experience in inspecting minor highway construction projects or hot mix and concrete plants or performing administrative or advanced engineering and construction records maintenance or related duties; or 90 semester hours applicable toward a Bachelor's degree in Engineering Technology; or closely related profession may be substituted for the required.
Pre-Employment Requirements: A valid state Driver's license with an acceptable 39 month driving history is required.
Arizona Technical Testing Institute Certification American Concrete Institute Certification Medical/Physical evaluation required prior to appointment If this position requires driving or the use of a vehicle as an essential function of the job to conduct State business, then the following requirements apply: Driver’s License Requirements.
